What do I mean when I say doing less will achieve more? The secret to growth is not about our actions, but more about our rest in Christ. To grow we need to do a few things:
- STOP - We need to disconnect from the world that we are constantly connected to. We need to stop texting, going on Facebook, tweeting, playing xBox, hanging out with friends, watching TV, adding more things to our schedule... and just relax in the arms of Christ. We need to get alone, in a quiet place, free from distractions and just rest. This is something that Jesus did... and if Jesus needed to disconnect and stop from the busyness of life and ministry, then so do we!
- LISTEN - Many times when we stop, we come to God and we treat Him like a Genie (Yes... I am thinking of Genie from Aladdin). We come to Him with our own agenda and we simply say, "Bless me, bless me bless me. Give me, give me, give me. Help me, help me, help me. Amen" We check our "quiet time" off of our list and continue with our day. I think we actually hurt the heart of God when we do this, because often God wants to tell us something but we're too busy talking to listen. The question isn't, "Is God speaking?", the question is, "Are we listening?" I will write more in the next couple of weeks on how to listen to God.
Whoever is of God hears the words of God. - John 8:47
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. - John 10:27
- RESPOND - When God speaks, we have two choices... to respond or not. God urges us to respond to His voice and obey His leading. God may show you sin in your life, bring that to Him and repent of it. God might show you an area where He is not Lord, submit it to Him. God might direct you to go a talk to someone, you should go and speak! However God speaks to you, your response should be to respond in obedience. To respond in any other way is disobedience to Christ! A side note: any time God speaks, He will not speak in contradiction to His written word, the Bible. Everything the God says will be in line with what scripture tells us. So respond to what God has told you in line with His Word.
In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome... - 1 John 5:3
